“All Marketers are Liars!”
Seth Godin shocked the industry when he published the combative headline back in 2005.
Of course, Seth used this title for effect.
His message was more about how to make sales.
What do you think? — Is Lying Necessary?
Sure, most of us tell stories. That’s the bread and butter of marketing.
Shocking is more interesting. It breeds attention.
Not gonna lie (about lying, anyway) I’ve stretched the truth before and I’ll do it again.
There’s a few things that marketers will tell you that are just NOT TRUE.
Marketers say these things to make a dollar.
And you might say them, too!
Lie #1 — Making Money Online is Easy
It’s not easy.
You need to take continuous action.
It may look easy when marketers screenshot their earnings.
But let’s face it. They’re either lying about their numbers, or they haven’t told you what they did to get there. Take a look at my income reports, as an example.
Visitors see me making over $5,000+/month, and they think “wow!,” anyone could do this.
To make matters worse, I brag constantly about only spending 5-15 minutes per day on marketing.
That’s the truth. It only takes a few minutes to maintain an email list.
What you don’t see is the hours and days of struggle it took me to get there.
A quality mentor can take you from $0.00 to $5,000/month in the easiest way possible.
I coach people step-by-step how to set up a passive income stream. It really cuts out the information overload, and shows you what you really need to get $$$

You should never expect a cakewalk, though…
Customers love hearing that marketing is easy. It can be easier than going from scratch. It will never be as easy as pushing buttons (more on that later).
Yet, that’s what people want.
There’s a huge desire for people to avoid work. And that’s great. That’s definitely a goal of mine, and it’s reasonable to be yours as well.
But that’s the GOAL.
To get there, you will need to put in the hours on the front end.
A guy name Tim Ferris published the Four Hour Work Week years ago (great book, btw).
It sparked a ton of controversy by doubters that believe the 4 hour work week is not possible.
I can tell you firsthand — four hours per week is POSSIBLE.
However, to get to that point. You need to put in much more than four hours in the beginning.
That’s the hard truth that NOBODY wants to hear.
The idea of making huge money in a short timeframe is exciting. And while you can build to that point — it will not happen overnight.
Lie #2 — Overnight Results are Normal
When a new guy on the block has a wildly successful product launch.
The illusion is that it’s possible to go from zero to hero in a day.
Sorry folks.
More often than not, the new guy has been building towards this “overnight” success for years.
A couple months ago, I wanted to know.
How do these new marketers come from nowhere?
So I asked two of the friendliest and successful FB friends I could find.
I turned to Kevin Fahey and Joshua Zamora
Both of these dudes have released successful product after product.
And… both started out exactly where most of us are now. At the beginning.
Here’s Joshua’s response:
And from Kevin:
What are Joshua and Kevin telling us?
These brilliant marketers drop some knowledge here.
It pays to help others out. Especially when you can help someone that can return the favour.
Any time you have an opportunity to help someone in a better situation than yourself — do it.
Too many of us are looking for a handout from the big boys of marketing.
The reality is that if you build a good report with these guys, it can really pay dividends on your future projects.
It may LOOK overnight when a new guy breaks the JvZoo Best Seller List.
The reality is the newcomer most likely put the hours in well before you even heard his name.
There may be exceptions to this, although I doubt there are many.
Go ahead and ask them. Most are from humble beginnings.
Lie #3 — Push Button DFY Solutions are Real
We’re finding some commonalities here.
Most wantrapreneurs hate putting in work.
That is the dream after all — Go online to avoid the 9-5 at all costs.
One of the easiest ways to make a sale is to claim there’s ZERO work involved.
This is also referred to as “done for you” (DFY)
Think about this logically for a second. If there’s a “done-for-you” solution that prints money on demand with no work or time involved, why would anyone need to sell it.
If I created such a tool, I’d hog it for myself and print money for DAYYZZZ, son.
The message you hear is “it was time for me to give back, so I decided to open this up to the public”
…Bullshit!
The next thing you know this dude is topping the JvZoo Best Seller charts and laughing his way to the bank.
Don’t trust DFY everything. It doesn’t exist.
There’s such a thing as mostly DFY. And that should be considered. But anything that claims there’s no work involved — and riches are guaranteed. Think to yourself, why the hell would someone need to sell that?!
Lie #4 — You’re One Shiny Object Away from Instant Riches
Marketers need you to buy things.
What they don’t want you to know is that there’s not that many things that are crucial.
I could teach you how to make $5k/month with just a few things.
All you need is:
None of those things are that shiny.
Aweber and HostGator have been around for years.
It’s dangerous to tell the truth.
When you tell people that they only need to buy three things, you stop making daily sales.
Entire markets are fictitiously created to get your money.
For example, an article spinner is useless in 2016.
You won’t hear many marketers tell you that.
Before Google learned to combat blatant content spam, it was profitable to spin articles and crank out thousands of pages of pure trash.
These articles didn’t directly make sales, but they did get traffic.
And with traffic, you can make a buck or two with advertising.
This was a loophole that lasted a couple years. And some clever tricksters created tools that could ingeniously blast out nonsense articles in automated seconds.
It worked — but it wouldn’t last.
There is no benefit to this strategy anymore.
To be successful with a website in the present (and especially the future), you need to add value.
That doesn’t stop trickster marketers from peddling article spinners.
They still exist, and they’re sold every, single, day.
Why would people sell something that’s useless?
As long as marketers can convince people an object is shiny, they will sell it.
Useful or otherwise.
Article spinners are only one example.
Every day there’s a new:
- Instagram bot
- FB liker
- Twitter automator
- Email scraper
- Open rate maximizer
- Push button profiter
I’m not saying that they’re all useless.
I have some shiny tools, too.
Some WordPress plugins and themes pack a punch.
And without LongTailPro, my keyword research phase would take an extra hour.
Could I do it all without a single shiny object?
The answer is YES!
All I need is hosting, a squeeze page creator and an autoresponder.
Everything else in my business contributes little to my bottom line.
Even this blog…
… Gasp!
Hate to break it to you, but the post you’re reading this minute does not make me sales. Or if it does, they will be few in number.
My success is due to my email list.
And to top it all off, my list takes up the smallest portion of my time.
So when marketers say you need just one more thing to be successful.
They’re LYING!
The best investment you could ever make online is on a mentor — not a shiny object.
Join my team here (send me a pm).
You can figure all this stuff out without spending a dime on anything shiny.
Or you could learn from an expert, and bypass the noise.
Wrapping it Up
This post has the four BIG LIES of marketing (my list, anyway).
What do you think?
Did I miss a lie worth mentioning?
Are marketers all liars?
These are all questions that I would appreciate your feedback on.
