Let’s be clear for a second.
Long Tail Pro has NOT even ONE proprietary function in it’s arsenal.
Absolutely everything can be done manually (for free).
But you should still buy it!
So why would anyone buy Long Tail Pro?
Read through this review, and you’ll understand exactly why 1,000’s of successful marketers are choosing Long Tail Pro.
But first – why you’ll fail without proper keyword research
Sounds harsh to say!
Don’t mean to be a Debbie Downer. I get a dozen emails every day asking “why is my site not making any money online”
And well, there are usually about a million reasons
- Their site has barely any readable content.
- Their blog design looks like it was created in the 1980’s.
- Their site was created less than a month ago…
So yeah, there’s lots of reasons. But more than anything else. The mistake that prevents people from making any progress with this gig, is not picking the right keywords.
Picking lucrative keywords is your quickest step to that 5 figures/month online.
Keywords matter!!
Whether you use my free keyword research methods, or you invest in a tool like Long Tail Pro, you must figure out a way to do keyword research properly. Your success depends on it!
Got that covered…
Now, let’s go over the nuts and bolts.
Here are the main features:
- Searches multiple keywords at once
- Up to 800 results per keyword (I’ll explain this limit later…)
- Filter keywords based on traffic
- Checks search competition
- Filters out short-tail keywords (this one’s a biggie)
Later in this post, I’m gonna show y’all how to do this for free.
The reason to buy Long Tail Pro is because it saves time. And the real question is “how much is your time worth?
My typical Long Tail Pro session looks like this:
I open the application in my computer…
Oops!
Looks like it’s still got my keywords from last session.
Let’s just delete all those…
Then, click on the “Find Keywords” button on the top left.
That’ll swing open a sideways tab for your seed keywords.
It looks like this:
Seed keywords are your starting point.
They are general. They (usually) spit out hundreds of longer tail keywords.
For example:
Entering the seed keyword “create a blog” has 801 results.
Here’s some of them:
With just a tiny bit of tweaking, you can sort and filter the results.
For HUGE time savings!
For example:
On the “Find Keywords” button, we can filter out keywords that are useless to us.
Keywords that are too short tail. Or phrases that don’t get enough traffic.
Here’s a look at using it with our seed “create a blog”
By using “Suggested Bid,” we can get rid of keywords that aren’t lucrative.
Because as we all know, if their aren’t Adwords buyers spending money on a keyword, it’s almost definitely not profitable. And a waste of our time…
By using “Local Search Volume,” we can get rid of keywords that don’t get enough traffic.
Again… saving us time.
And finally, the best feature in Long Tail Pro.
Using “Num Words” to only show results with a certain number of words.
Lemme explain why this is AWESOME!
Most keywords suck.
Some of the best keywords are long tail. Hence the name of the product “Long Tail Pro”
Long tails are good for two reasons:
- They are usually less competitive
- They are usually more buyer-friendly
It’s not hard for authority sites to scoop up all the rankings for short tail keywords. Search terms that are three words or less usually get results from: Wikipedia, Amazon, or other internet giants.
The everyday blogger, or Amazon affiliate gets his real chance to focus on longer tail keywords.
These keywords are easier to rank (usually) because less sites include longer tail variations.
For example, an individual product keyword could be something like:
HD 600 Sennheiser Headphone Review
A niche site on headphones could very easily rank for this long tail keyword.
HOWEVER, this small time affiliate site wouldn’t stand a chance at ranking “headphones,” or even “headphone reviews…” for those keywords, Amazon and/or authority sites have the lockdown.
But you Shouldn’t Care!!
Long tail keywords are usually more profitable (per visitor)
Think about it this way…
If a visitor is searching for a review on a specific product, like the “hd senneiser 600’s”
How far along is this visitor in the buying cycle?
Pretty damn far!
He has a particular product in mind. He just needs that extra push, and he’ll gladly whip out his card and make a purchase.
On the other hand, if the visitor is just looking for “headphone reviews” online.
How far is he, in this case?
Not very far!
He’s just window shopping. He may indeed make a purchase. But it’s a lot less likely. And it’ll probably be on his next trip to the store (Google).
Get it?
Not only are long tail keywords easier to rank – they’re also more lucrative.
And Long Tail Pro is LOADED with ’em.
Press a couple buttons, and within seconds, you’ll have a full list of keywords that are ONLY long tail.
Instead of sorting through hundreds of short tail keywords. We can easily focus on the select one’s that will actually make us money.
Take a look:
By limiting our search to only long tail keywords, we are left with 64 results out of 800.
We got rid of over 90%. With One-click. Talk about awesome!
What metrics matter:
Aside from “length of keyword”
We also want a “high suggested bid” and reasonable “local traffic”
The suggested bid tells us what advertisers are willing to spend to get traffic to the keyword.
The first mistake I ever made creating niche sites was picking keywords without commercial intent.
Sure, you can get boatloads of traffic to “the Beatles lyrics”
But if people aren’t spending money after searching… who cares?
The amount of local traffic is important, only for common sense purposes.
I usually set the local traffic minimum and maximum directly into my Long Tail Pro settings. So I don’t even really need to waste any time on this one.
You want keywords that get some traffic. But you (usually) don’t want keywords with 1oo,000’s of visitors per month. Unless you really plan on attacking it.
The reason?
High traffic keywords are immensely competitive – In most cases.
For that you need an authority site. Depends on your strategy.
How to Start from Scratch Quickly:
- From the beginning, I’d find 10-20 good seed keywords in your niche. (This takes a bit of creativity, but they can also be stumbled upon in the research process.)
- Plug them all into Long Tail Pro, and apply the right filters.
- Save the best keywords.
In the next 30 mins, you could easily have a whole plan of attack ready to go…
Trust me – keyword research is worth your time.
How to Do This Without Long Tail Pro
I said it in the beginning… all this stuff can be done manually.
I’ve even got a full YouTube video on how to do this for free.
It’s easy – but it takes longer:
As you’ll see by the video, you can filter by “number of words,” easily find “suggested bids” and “local traffic” without buying Long Tail Pro.
It takes some time to set up, though.
So, if you’re on a budget… why not do it for free?
On the other hand (unless you’re dead-broke), you should invest in Long Tail Pro.
The question, again, is “how much is your time worth?”
For most of us, Long Tail Pro is worth it!
